Winter storm prompts state of emergencies in Conn., NY

Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy is requesting help from the White House and FEMA in an effort to  obtain  road salt to treat the state’s highways.  The governor said on Thursday that the state is running out of salt used in snow removal.

The winter storm also prompted New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to declare a state of emergency earlier in the day Thursday.  

Director of State Operations Howard Glaser says the emergency declaration is necessary for the state to help out local communities in these situations.

Community activists and law enforcement officials in New Haven met with U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy today to discuss efforts to reduce gun violence in the city. The city saw 20 homicides and 67 shootings in 2013.

Malloy opens legislative session with proposals fit for a reelection campaign

Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy presented a revised $19 billion budget proposal to state lawmakers today on the first day of their new legislative session. The proposal includes a $55 gas and sales tax refund to taxpayers, and tax breaks for retired teachers, as well as the expansion of rental subsidies for seniors, housing for homeless veterans and an expansion of early childhood education. WSHU’s Ebong Udoma was in Harford for the Governor's speech, and spoke live from there with Mark Herz.

Malloy: State has enough salt to treat roads, some municipalities 'having difficulty'

Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy says the state has not had an issue keeping up with the amount of salt it needs to treat the roads after several snowstorms and another expected this weekend.

Meanwhile, the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities says most cities and towns in the state have used more than half of their snow removal budgets, while others have already used their entire budget for snow removal.

Two New York hospitals say they still have not yet reached deals with insurance companies participating the state's new health insurance exchange.  But one of them, Stony Brook University Hospital, says a deal is imminent.  Much of the struggle is over low reimbursement rates.
