US Transportation Secretary seeks support for more federal spending on rail

The new U.S. Transportation Secretary used a visit to Connecticut today on Monday to urge Congress to support a $40 billion plan to improve rail transportation. The plan is contained in President Obama's 2014 federal budget proposal. It's the secretary's first visit to a state since he was confirmed by the U.S. Senate last month.

Connecticut House Speaker Brendan Sharkey says he wants to take a look at the state's self-defense laws to make sure a situation like the deadly shooting of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin can't happen in Connecticut.

Court throws out charges related to massacre for former Mexican president, now a Yale prof

A U.S. District Court in Hartford, Connecticut threw out a lawsuit late last week against former Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo. The lawsuit accused Zedillo, who is now a professor at Yale University, of crimes against humanity. An attorney for the plaintiffs in the case says he plans to appeal the decision.

Decreasing shatter rate in baseball bats

Researchers with the U.S. Forest Service have been testing and analyzing thousands of shattered Major League Baseball bats. As the Innovation Trail's Kate O'Connell reports, they've been able to decrease the shatter rate by more than half.
