Federal judge says using shackles during immigration proceedings violates rights

A federal judge has ruled Immigrations and Customs Enforcement violated a New Haven man’s constitutional rights when he was shackled during immigration court proceedings. The federal judge’s ruling late last week does not force ICE to stop the practice. It says there should have been an assessment to determine if the shackling was necessary in the case of Mark Reid. Reid is represented by the Worker and Immigrant Rights Advocacy Clinic at Yale Law School.

US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York is moving forward on her effort to strip senior military commanders of their authority to investigate and prosecute sexual assaults. After her proposal failed in an emotional Senate vote last week Gillibrand says she will make another push in six to nine months.

NY Senate Republicans to vote "no" on Regents as criticism of Common Core

New York Senate Republicans say they will break a long standing tradition of boycotting the election of new Regents. They now say they will attend a joint legislative session, and that many will vote "no" over dissatisfaction with the Common Core education standards.

Stamford Mayor David Martin proposes 4.9% tax hike in first budget

Mayor David Martin of Stamford presents a summary of his recommended budget for the 2014-5 fiscal year at a press briefing at the Government Center Monday.

First-term Stamford Mayor David Martin is proposing a tax increase of 1.17 mills or nearly 5 percent for the 2014-15 budget year. Martin is presenting his budget to the city’s Board of Finance Monday night. The mayor says his $515 million budget includes funding to fix longstanding structural issues.
