Bill to ban fracking waste from Conn. passes state legislative committee

A bill that would prohibit the storage or disposal of hydraulic fracking waste in Connecticut got the approval of a key legislative committee on Monday. Lawmakers on the state General Assembly’s Judiciary Committee voted 34 to 6 to move the bill forward.

Bellone hikes age to buy tobacco

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone signed a  law on Monday increasing the minimum age for buying tobacco and e-cigarettes from 19 to 21 years old. The law was pushed by health advocates who say it will reduce youth’s access to cigarettes.

Former Yerwood Center employee seeking injunction against closing programs

Attorneys for a former teacher at Stamford’s Yerwood Center and the center itself appeared in Stamford Superior Court Monday. Bonnie Campbell of Stamford charges the center is seeking to illegally shut down federally-funded programs.

Conn. & New York achieving nitrogen reductions in Long Island Sound

A report card released today by an environmental group gives Connecticut and New York pretty good grades for their efforts to reduce the amount of nitrogen pumped into Long Island Sound. The states have been working for a decade to reduce emissions of nitrogen coming from wastewater. Environmentalists say there’s still more to do.
