Last month, foreclosure filings sunk to the lowest number since the housing crisis began eight years ago. Home prices are up nationwide. But the recovery isn’t being felt everywhere. In fact, in some states like Connecticut, foreclosures are soaring.

A winter storm is approaching the region with the potential to drop more than a foot of snow.
 
 Winter storm warnings and watches are in effect for the entire region, with the
storm promising to make travel messy on the first work day of the new year.
 
 The worst of the storm is expected to hit later on Thursday with bitterly cold
temperatures. Parts of Connecticut could see 10 inches of snow before the storm
moves on. Already, light snow is falling across much of the region with wind
chills hovering around 10-above.

LI Senator Charles Fuschillo resigns

New York State Senator Charles Fuschillo resigned effective midnight Tuesday.  In a surprise statement posted to his web site, the 7-term Republican from Merrick says he will become CEO of the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.  Fuschillo's departure leaves both the state senate and Long Island in a precarious situation.

Suffolk Police call 2013 safest year ever

Suffolk County Police say that 2013 was the safest year ever since the department was formed in 1960.  Between 2012 and 2013 there was a 10% drop in overall crime.  However, firearm activity spiked.

Conn. minimum wage goes up on January 1st

The minimum wage goes up in Connecticut on January 1st.  The increase is from $8.25 an hour to $8.70 an hour. Governor Dannel Malloy and the Democratic leaders of the state General Assembly celebrated the increase at a news conference in Hartford on Monday.
