NY approves largest land preserve in generation

A New York State panel voted Friday to create a vast new 24,000 acre wilderness area along a remote stretch of the upper Hudson River, about four hours north of Long Island.  The land had been owned by a logging company and environmentalists feared that remote stretches of the upper Hudson might be sold for resort or second-home development.  This decision by the Adirondack Park Agency commission sets aside a sprawling area of wild rivers, pristine lakes, and forests where most human development will be banned.

  Bells rang at 9:30 on Saturday morning at The Basilica of Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Stamford, Connecticut, and other churches and institutions, in memory of those  killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School a year ago.

In Newtown, making promises to transform a tragedy

In the year since the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, some in that community have been working to turn that tragedy into a moment of transition. The group Sandy Hook Promise is both a support group for families and an advocate for ending gun violence.

Scarlett Lewis describes the last year of her life as a journey. Since her son Jesse was killed in the Sandy Hook shooting last December, Lewis and her other son have been trying to find ways to deal with their grief. They’ve found one of the most important things they could do is forgive.
