As World Cup fever grips the globe, fans in New Haven, Connecticut are watching the matches live outdoors on large TV screens in a downtown courtyard. The courtyard called Pitkin Plaza is now known as New Haven’s World Cup Village. Host country Brazil took on Croatia in the opening match.
A new report by the group Mayors Against Illegal Guns and other advocates says between the 2012 shooting in Newtown and February of this year, there were 44 school shootings in the U.S, with 30 more since then. Congressman John Larson of Connecticut is calling for a vote on legislation requiring background checks to purchase guns.
The Connecticut Department of Transportation says tree clearing along the 37 mile-long Merritt Parkway is about 30 percent complete. DOT crews have been on a major push to clear trees along the state’s roads since Hurricane Irene, the October snowstorm in 2011 and super storm Sandy.
An upcoming report on child deaths in Connecticut is expected to show a number of infants and toddlers who were involved with the state’s Department of Children and Families died last year. The report is already prompting calls for a public hearing into the deaths of kids in DCF’s care.
