US Transportation Secretary warns states about federal highway fund running out of money

US Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx is warning states of the danger of letting a federal fund for road and bridge repairs run out of money.  Unless Congress acts, the Highway Trust Fund, used to reimburse states for highway and transit projects, is set to become insolvent later this summer. Foxx met with Governor Dannel Malloy and members of Connecticut’s Congressional delegation in Hartford today on Thursday.

Union "certain" Democrats will control Albany

The influential labor union 32BJ SEIU endorsed State Senator Jeff Klein Thursday. The endorsement is the latest in a series of moves that stands to put Democrats back in charge of Albany.

After Democrats appeared to win control of the State Senate in 2010 Klein stopped caucusing with them and started the breakaway Independent Democratic Conference which aligns itself with Republicans.

175 years after Amistad revolt, non-profit struggles to carry on story

A hundred and seventy five years ago Wednesday, 49 African men and four children who had been sold into the slave trade, revolted on board the schooner La Amistad. The ship ultimately made it to Connecticut, where today, a non-profit with a state-funded replica of the ship is struggling to carry on the story.

Connecticut’s largest union endorsed Democratic Governor Dannel Malloy for a second term on Wednesday. The endorsement comes even though Malloy has had some tough negotiations with state employee unions during his term as governor.

Cuomo urged to stop LIRR strike

Worried time is running out, several Long Island State Senators are urging New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to intercede in the stalled contract negotiations between the MTA and Long Island Rail Road workers.

Technically there is no deadline. LIRR workers are legally allowed to strike beginning Sunday, July 20th. However, they previously offered to push that date back to the end of summer where a strike would have more impact. There would be fewer people on vacation, college students would be back on the train, and it's the eve of November's gubernatorial election.
