A bill coming before the Suffolk County legislature would require county police, among other things, to get a college degree if they want a promotion above the rank of captain. But the bill will likely hit stiff resistance from police unions.
Police all across New York state will be supplied with the drug widely seen as an antidote to heroin and painkiller overdoses. New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman created the program and funded it with $5 million in money seized from criminal investigations.
The number of hate crimes in New York State jumped 30% in 2012 compared to the year prior. That’s from a state report released Thursday that says most of the statewide increase is attributed to Suffolk County property crimes classified as hate crimes.
