A man who spent 17 years wrongfully imprisoned for murdering his own parents has won a $3.3 million dollar settlement against the State of New York. This is the first of two lawsuits filed by Martin Tankleff.
The number of hate crimes in New York State jumped 30% in 2012 compared to the year prior. That’s from a state report released Thursday that says most of the statewide increase is attributed to Suffolk County property crimes classified as hate crimes.
The Suffolk County Legislature approved a settlement on Tuesday between the county police department and the U.S. Department of Justice over allegations of discriminatory policing.
The agreement comes after a five-year federal investigation into the murder of Ecuadorian immigrant Marcelo Lucero in 2008. The Justice Department concluded that police discouraged Latinos from reporting crimes and improperly classified hate crimes.
