The Suffolk County Legislature approved a settlement on Tuesday between the county police department and the U.S. Department of Justice over allegations of discriminatory policing.
The agreement comes after a five-year federal investigation into the murder of Ecuadorian immigrant Marcelo Lucero in 2008. The Justice Department concluded that police discouraged Latinos from reporting crimes and improperly classified hate crimes.
Suffolk County settled another lawsuit with the US Attorney's office Wednesday. This latest one will cost tax payers $2-million for environmental violations stemming from underground storage tanks owned by the county.
The number of hate crimes in New York State jumped 30% in 2012 compared to the year prior. That’s from a state report released Thursday that says most of the statewide increase is attributed to Suffolk County property crimes classified as hate crimes.
