The environmental group Long Island Soundkeepers is suing New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation, and the company that runs Long Island’s biggest power plant.

The lawsuit says National Grid’s Northport Power Station is killing billions of fish in Long Island Sound. Adrienne Esposito, Executive Director of Citizens Campaign for the Environment said the station’s 50-year-old water cooling system uses water from Long Island sound to regulate the power station’s temperature.

The Long Island town of Islip said Monday that the air around Roberto Clemente park in Brentwood does not contain asbestos. Air sampling was necessary after officials found 32,000 tons of illegally dumped material there that did contain asbestos. There is now a criminal investigation underway and  the issue is also becoming political.

Suffolk County settled another lawsuit with the US Attorney's office Wednesday.  This latest one will cost tax payers $2-million for environmental violations stemming from underground storage tanks owned by the county.
