Some of the state’s top ranking education officials are condemning a vote by a State University of New York committee that would weaken regulations for teachers at some charter schools.

The State University of New York says it’s considering developing its own teacher certification program to help staff their charter schools. The schools are dealing with a teacher shortage, which has been blamed on the state’s rigorous teacher qualifications.

There are 17 charter schools – schools that are publicly funded but independently run - in the state of Connecticut. State lawmakers are considering a controversial bill that would put a moratorium on any new ones.

On Wednesday, supporters of charter schools spoke against the bill at a rally at a New Haven charter school. Speaker Desire Gonzales said she thinks charter schools have higher standards. Her son is in public school, and her daughter is in a charter school.

It was the charter schools’ turn to rally at the State Capitol Wednesday in support of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s proposal to allow 100 more charter schools in New York.

Thousands of charter school students on 450 buses, along with their parents and teachers, came to Albany for a rally that was billed by organizers as a school field trip. They heard nearly two hours of speeches, watched dance performances, and saw celebrities like Grammy winning singer Ashanti.

Among the speakers, Senate Republican Leader Dean Skelos of Long Island, and Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul.
