Brutal Gang Murders Devastate Long Island, Draw Federal Attention

A Long Island community is on edge as it mourns the death of four teenage boys. Police found the bodies of Jorge Tigre and Michael Banegas last week near a community park in Central Islip. Police say the brutal manner in which the boys were killed are consistent with the style of MS-13 murders.

After a five-month investigation, more than a dozen MS-13 gang members have been charged with seven murders, including those of three teenagers from Brentwood in Suffolk County. U.S. Attorney Robert Capers announced the charges.

Suffolk County police are searching a wooded area off the Sagtikos Parkway as part of their investigation into possible gang murders in Brentwood.

VETTS / Integrated Wellness Group

A program in New Haven, Connecticut is hiring U.S. military veterans as mentors to help steer teens away from gang-related activity. Last week it received a $30,000 grant from the state Department of Veteran’s Affairs.

Right now, the VETTS (Veterans Empowering Teens Through Support) program employs 12 veterans as mentors, both part-time and full-time. It’s both part of a larger statewide social services non-profit, and a city-sponsored initiative.
