U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., wants the Department of Justice to block proposed mergers of several health insurance giants.  

Blumenthal and a group of six other Democratic senators wrote a letter to the DOJ which is currently reviewing the possible mergers of Aetna and Humana, as well as Anthem and Cigna.

How Does Health Insurance Concentration Affect Prices?

The Affordable Care Act marketplaces have led to new research. One study this month looked at the concentration of hospitals and insurance plans in New York and California.

The research on hospitals is pretty clear: fewer hospitals in a region means higher premiums.

But on a different metric, results varied state to state: the concentration of insurance plans available in a region didn’t have the same impact on insurance prices.

Connecticut announced on Tuesday it’s launched a webpage to help families find state mental health resources. The  Mental Health Parity webpage also has information to help families navigate insurance coverage for behavioral health and substance abuse treatment.

On Thursday Connecticut opened the first storefront in the nation to help people sign-up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. The storefront is in New Britain.

Health exchanges in Connecticut and New York got off the ground yesterday.
