Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force

Tree clearing along Merritt 30% done, says CDOT

Jun 12, 2014

The Connecticut Department of Transportation says tree clearing along the 37 mile-long Merritt Parkway is about 30 percent complete. DOT crews have been on a major push to clear trees along the state’s roads since Hurricane Irene, the October snowstorm in 2011 and super storm Sandy.

After Superstorm Sandy communities high and dry for as long as anyone can remember suddenly found themselves under eight feet of water.  Post Sandy, a booming business in New York and New Jersey is house lifting.  Picking a house up and setting it on stilts or a higher foundation to protect it from a future storm surge.  But the rush to lift houses has regulators scurrying to catch up.

A report from the presidential task force strategizing ways to rebuild following Superstorm Sandy says communities should plan rebuilding for the coming climate change that includes more flooding and more storms.
