Monday was the first day of class at the new Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut – the first day in nearly four years since the shooting that killed 20 children and 6 educators.

Members of Connecticut’s Congressional delegation led the fight in Washington, D.C., this week to get federal lawmakers to take action on gun control measures following last Sunday’s mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando. They’re working hard to convince their colleagues in Congress to act.

About 200 LGBTQ people and allies gathered at the Amistad Memorial near the New Haven Green on Monday. Many held white balloons with a name of one of the 49 Orlando shooting victims written on each of them.  

Rally organizers led a chant about improving safety for the queer community:

“It is our duty to fight for freedom. It is our duty to win. We must love each other and support each other. We have nothing to lose but our chains.”

In Wake Of Orlando, Stonewall Vigil Attracts Thousands

Thousands gathered Monday night in front of the historic Stonewall Inn in New York to remember the victims of the mass shooting at an LGBT nightclub in Orlando. They also called for the federal government to enact gun control legislation.
