This weekend, nearly 30 teenage girls from Connecticut are headed to Washington state to compete in the national competition of synchronized swimming. The team, from New Canaan, is one of the top in the country in a sport that not many people know much about.

The idea has been criticized by many parents who say their children aren’t ready. But the option isn’t that radical. One nearby school district successfully made the transition nearly 20 years ago.
