News this week that the FBI raided the offices of yet another New York State lawmaker has pushed into the limelight a little known piece of legislation authored by a Long Island senator. Babylon Republican Phil Boyle has, for the last 15 years, wanted lawmakers to live in a dorm.

Supporters of Dream Act legislation say they were “set up”, when a hastily arranged vote on the bill in the Senate chamber late Monday led to the measure’s failure by just one vote.

New York State Senator Charles Fuschillo resigned effective midnight Tuesday.  In a surprise statement posted to his web site, the 7-term Republican from Merrick says he will become CEO of the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.  Fuschillo's departure leaves both the state senate and Long Island in a precarious situation.

Taxes and tax reform are likely to be a major topic in the next legislative session in New York.  Progressive groups and Republicans in the State Senate are weighing in.
