The president of the local teachers union in Newtown, Connecticut says his town didn’t receive federal funding for new locks and other school safety improvements until this June – more than a year and a half after the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. He appeared Friday at the twenty-first meeting of the governor's Sandy Hook Advisory Commission.

Architects of the new Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut have officially unveiled their plans for the school. The old Sandy Hook School was torn down following the December 2012 shooting there.

Officials in Newtown heard design plans for the new Sandy Hook Elementary School at a town meeting Tuesday. Residents voted last fall to tear down the building where 20 students and 6 teachers were shot in 2012. The school construction is being paid for with a $50 million state grant.

Peter Lanza is the father of Adam Lanza, the young Newtown Connecticut man who killed his mother, 20 children and six educators at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, and then himself.

Peter Lanza has avoided the press, but granted long interviews to writer Andrew Solomon last Fall. Solomon’s article on Peter Lanza is in this week’s New Yorker.

Andrew Solomon is the author of ‘Far from the Tree,’ which explores the relationships in families where children and parents are exceptionally different from each other. He also has a Ph.D. in psychology.

Vigil honors those lost to violence this year

Loved ones lost to violence were honored at a candlelight vigil in Stamford on Sunday. The event featured a special memorial to Newtown, with music and rituals from different faiths.
