In the year since the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, some in that community have been working to turn that tragedy into a moment of transition. The group Sandy Hook Promise is both a support group for families and an advocate for ending gun violence.

This weekend will mark one year since the school shooting in Newtown. U.S. Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut spoke about Newtown on the Senate floor Wednesday, bitterly criticizing his colleagues.

A Connecticut judge said on Friday he wants to hear the 9-1-1 recordings from the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting before ruling whether they can remain secret. Prosecutors and the town of Newtown are fighting to keep the recordings from being released to the media.

Schools in 36 districts across Connecticut will receive money to improve security as part of a state grant program. The $5 million grant came out of legislation passed after the Newtown school shooting.
