More jobs in Conn. & Long Island in March

Apr 17, 2014

March labor numbers for Connecticut and Long Island were released Thursday. Connecticut’s labor report shows the state added 4,900  jobs in March, helping to restore some of the jobs lost in a sudden dive in January. On Long Island, employers added over 14,000 private sector jobs in March compared to a year ago.

Labor numbers out Thursday show a slight increase in employment in Connecticut, and a dip on Long Island.  Labor economists on both sides of the Sound say the weather is playing a key role.

The Connecticut Labor Department says the state’s unemployment rate in August remained unchanged from July at 8.1 percent. The report shows a loss of 6,000 jobs, but the Labor Department says that's because of a miscalculation last month in their seasonal adjustment of the labor numbers.  Long Island’s private sector lost 600 jobs in August compared to July. But the New York Department of Labor says that’s an improvement in the long-term. Over the prior 10 Augusts, the losses averaged 3,000.
