Long Island Congressman Steve Israel says it could have been worse.

The six-term incumbent from Huntington, N.Y., has finished his second term as chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, a job aimed at getting — and keeping — as many Democrats in Congress as possible.

As head of the DCCC, Israel had to raise money, screen candidates, decide which candidates to spend the money on, and strategize national messaging.

In addition to all that, Steve Israel found the time to write a novel.

Following a visit with the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday, Long Island Congressman Steve Israel said Netanyahu’s is hoping the temporary cease fire with Hamas will last.

His essential message to us is that Israel wants peace and quiet and hopes that Hamas also wants peace and quiet. And if in fact they do, there can be a sustainable cease fire,” he said.

The Long Island Democratic is leading a bipartisan delegation of nine members of Congress who are visiting Israel this week. They met with the Israeli prime minister in Jerusalem.

At a breakfast meeting in Washington on Tuesday, Congressman Steve Israel was eating eggs and fielding questions from reporters about fundraising statistics and battleground districts.

But halfway into the meeting, he put down his fork and talked about student debt.

"Forgive me for this, but this is what you guys are missing," Israel said, "This issue is so potent it surprised me."
