Schumer Pushes Hard Against Trump Tax Proposal

U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has called on every New York member of Congress to oppose President Donald Trump’s plan to repeal state and local tax deductions. Schumer says the President’s plan would hurt thousands of Long Islanders.

The tax overhaul plan proposed by President Trump and now being considered in Congress would end the deduction on federal income tax forms for state and local property taxes. Governor Cuomo says it would disproportionately harm New Yorkers, where property taxes are among the highest in the nation, and he’s taken opportunities at public events recently to make the case against the plan.

New York’s Democratic lawmakers are vowing to fight President Trump’s  tax overhaul proposal, perhaps even in court. Meanwhile, a think tank’s analysis finds some middle class New Yorkers could actually save a small amount of money under the income tax portion of the plan.  

Governor Cuomo said the tax overhaul plan and the proposal to eliminate state and local tax deductions from federal income taxes would  be “devastating” to New York.

“It is a tax increase plan,” Cuomo said on Long Island Thursday. “Period.”

Cuomo said he might sue.
