A new Suffolk County law prohibits the manufacturing and sale of the synthetic drugs known as K2 and bath salts. New York State already has a ban on those drugs, but Suffolk County’s law goes further by banning all strains of it. Supporters hope the tighter ban will help stop it from being sold in the county.

The Suffolk County Legislature has voted unanimously to hire attorneys and sue drug companies that make opioid-based painkillers.

At its regular legislative meeting, Suffolk County lawmakers moved to ban the use of hydrofracking waste and to ban smoking on the campus of the county Community College.  Lawmakers also heard arguments about a bill that would ban the sale of puppies coming from so-called puppy mills.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone signed a  law on Monday increasing the minimum age for buying tobacco and e-cigarettes from 19 to 21 years old. The law was pushed by health advocates who say it will reduce youth’s access to cigarettes.
